1.- Summary

Journalist born in Spain and educated at the Density Design Lab of Politecnico of Milan in Italy and the University of Malaga. I worked from 2012 to 2014, as Graphics Director at the argentinian newspaper “La Nación”. In this period our team became an international reference on infographics being awarded by different organizations as the Society of News Design (SND), the Global Editors Network (GEN) and the Argentinian Journalists Association (ADEPA).

I regularly collaborate with “Il Corriere della Sera” in Italy, “Courrier International,” in France, and “Mongolia,” in Spain, among others. Previously I worked for Público (Spain) and El Mundo (Spain) as a graphic editor for print and online respectively.

Some of my information graphics, individually or as part of a team, were internationally awarded. For example: 3 gold medals in Malofiej (2010,2011,2014) or first in the Data Journalism Awards (2013). My portfolio won an excellence award of the Society of News Design in 2010.

I've taught interactive design and given talks on visual communication at University of Malaga, UNED, Istituto Europeo del Design (IED) and University of Buenos Aires, among others.

Some of my projects have been published in several books of comunication and information design as ‘An Atlas for Today’ (Gestalten, 2013), ‘Visual Storytelling’ (Gestalten, 2011), ‘Exploralab’ (Exploratorium Museum of San Francisco, 2013), ‘AntiFichus’ (Pequeño Editor, 2010), or ‘Papel Mojado’ (’Random House Mondadori’, 2013).

I strongly believe in teamwork, and I feel very lucky to have received tons of experience and more than forty international awards, learning, working (and cycling!) with some of the profession´s best.

2.- Details

AS GRAPHICS DIRECTOR

From december 2012 to april 2014, I worked as the head of infographics of La Nación (the second largest news company in Argentina), my focus was mainly on the importance of team building and in developing a workflow process. I supervised a team of graphics editors representing the department within the newsroom. Together with my team I had the opportunity to experience different breaking news and special coverages exploring new paths and methods that positioned us as one of the most important international publications in information graphics. In that period, our work was recognised with 12 awards from national and international organisations as the Argentinian Journalists Society (ADEPA), the Society of News Design (SND), or the Global Editors Network (GEN). Between other, we won 9 medals in the 2014 Malofiej Summit, where La Nación was the third publication most awarded by number of medals in the print cathegory just behind National Geographic and The New York Times (11 medals).

AS GRAPHICS EDITOR

Público 03/2009 - 11/2011, Graphic editor (print) at Público, Spain. Making part of one of the most awarded infographics teams in Europe, sharing and learning with the job of some prestigious professionals

El Mundo 07/2008 - 03/2009 El Mundo (Spain) Digital graphic editor at El Mundo, Spain. At the beginning, as an internship, and after as a collaborator, I developed during several months, some interactive tools with ActionScript and XML. Learning a lot about infographic concepts in a strong and experienced team

AS FREELANCE DESIGNER

I have been regular contributor to the Italian daily Il Corriere della Sera, publishing
a monthly visual page in the cultural supplement La Lettura since 2012. Most of these visualization and other projects ad hoc are also published in a visual data page on the section Signaux, of Courrier International

With the Studio Anversal, I participated in a project to redesign infographic Italian sports dailies Corriere dello Sport and Tuttosport. With Errea Comunicación I took part also in the restyling of Courrier International. Both projects in 2012.

Graphic design work and multimedia projects for clients from different countries since 2001. Among the most important are ESADE business school, in Spain, with which I make annual reports for the Spanish Ministry of Economy, some companies like Idealista, leader of real estate in Spain or Unicaja, one of the biggest banks in southern Spain.

AS TEACHER AND LECTURER

I was invited for different talks in information graphics in several universities and communication/design schools as University of Malaga, University of Buenos Aires, Instituto Europeo del Design.

I also tought design and communication for Ingenia, M Capital, AudioLis, Gobierno de Aragón, Diputación Provincial de Málaga in Spain, and Formater, ASCOM Vercelli and Arcoform in Italy.

AS RESEARCHER

I presented in 2008 my degree dissertation called ‘Infographics as a social communication tool: an analysis from a semiotic perspective’. Defended as degree dissertation at the end of the Bachelor at Politecnico of Milan. In 2009 I started (not finished) the final phase of my doctoral thesis ‘Graphic Journalism and the popularization of the social indicators: real world through graphic press’. This line of work comes from the laboratory densityDesign of Paolo Ciuccarelli, where I participated during 2006/07. I belong to the research group Labcom SEJ-389 of the ‘Junta de Andalucía’, supervised by Doctor Professor María Angeles Cabrera of the University Malaga. An article with the basis of my thesis was published in the ‘Textual & Visual Media’, magazine of the Spanish Society of Journalistic, (ISSN 1889-2515) with the title ‘Graphic Journalism from a semiotic perspective: information, interpretation and opinion in daily news’. In 2007, I reached the first phase in my PhD studies, (in Spain called Diploma of Advanced Studies), with a a research project titled ‘Portable information’ about the digital media, the syndication of news and the new journalism formats.

I took part in Visualizar 2008, celebrated in MediaLab Prado (Madrid, Spain). Together with a group of proffesors and students of the Politecnico of Milan (M.Quaggiotto, D.Ricci, G.Scagnetti, G.Caviglia, M.Graffietti, D.Guido), we developed a project that proposed the redesigning of the streets map based on the information of the city and its streets that the different mass media offer. Madrid.citymurmur.org, was presented in HiperUrbain (Paris, France) under the name of: New maps from the media-city. CityMurmur as a tool for the visualization of urban space, Deuxième colloque sur les Technologies de l’Information et de la Communication en milieu urbain.

Also in Siggraph 2009, celebrated in New Orleans (US) We presented neworleans.citymurmur.org (a continuation of the Madrid project), during the 2009 edition of SIGGRAPH in New Orleans at the 36th international conference and exhibitions on computer graphics and interactive techniques

5.- Exhibitions and more

As an infographic artist, I think charts are a very interesting vehicle to communicate, but also to seduce, to emotion, to protest, to answer and even to ask. Here are listed some experiences:
